Australia Post has reintroduced temporary weekend parcel deliveries across all metropolitan capital cities and select regional centres, marking a significant capacity expansion as the national postal operator braces for what it expects to be its busiest festive shipping period on record.
Weekend Delivery Returns
The weekend delivery window, activated in late November 2025, is designed to absorb the surge in online orders triggered by Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales events. During the previous year’s Black Friday period alone, Australia Post handled nearly 103 million parcels, and the organisation anticipates 2025 volumes will exceed that benchmark as Australian consumers continue shifting spending online.
Weekend deliveries are available in all metro areas across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Darwin, and Canberra, as well as in select regional cities and towns. The move effectively extends the delivery week from five days to seven in covered areas, reducing transit times and easing pressure on weekday sorting and dispatch operations during the peak window.
Capacity and Workforce
Weekend deliveries are only one part of a broader capacity build. Australia Post has invested across multiple fronts to prepare for the 2025 peak season, including next-generation Post Office fitouts, an expanded national electric vehicle fleet, and extended trading hours at more than 300 post office locations.
Thousands of temporary workers have been hired to supplement the permanent workforce through the peak period, covering sorting facilities, delivery routes, and retail counters. The organisation has also expanded its network of self-service parcel lockers, giving recipients an additional collection option that reduces failed delivery attempts and the associated cost of redelivery.
On the sustainability front, Australia Post’s electric delivery vehicle fleet has grown to more than 5,600 vehicles, now covering in excess of 29 million kilometres annually. That fleet plays a central role in last-mile operations across urban areas, where the density of deliveries makes electrification both practical and cost-effective.
Christmas Sending Deadlines
The weekend delivery expansion sits alongside Australia Post’s annual Christmas sending cutoff dates, which serve as a critical planning milestone for retailers and e-commerce operators.
